Diabetes Amputation StatisticsFoot Problems are One Possible Complication from Diabetes
Jan. 27, 2016 – According to the Centers for Disease Control, as of 2014, about 9.3% of the US population (29.1 million people), have diabetes. Just over 25% are un-diagnosed.
Diabetes Amputation – In 2010, there were about 73,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations done on adults, age 20 years or older with a diabetes diagnosis. This means that about 60% of the non-traumatic lower-limb amputation among people age 20 or older occurs in people with diagnosed diabetes.
These dry statistics fail to quantify the psychological adjustment to amputation by the patient – who could be you if you face this problem in the near future. What will happen to you if amputation has been recommended for you?

What happens after an amputation?
It is clear that depression and anxiety increase significantly for up to 2 years after you have an amputation. While some suggest “time heals all wounds” and “you’ll get over it,” waking up to a missing foot or leg is going to be an everyday occurrence if you do have an amputation. Plus, you might even have phantom limb or stump pain.
Very likely, even with time, you are probably going to continue to have social discomfort and body-image anxiety after your amputation. This will also lead to increased activity restriction, continued anxiety and potentially depression. These factors can be helped with more social support, active coping attempts, increased satisfaction with a prosthesis, and if you’re an optimist in general, this will help.
There will likely be questions about how you will be reacting immediately after the amputation. What is your adjustment and change in self identity after the operation?
Unfortunately, studies show that about 30% of amputees have anxiety and about 13% have depression. Appearance-related issues cause personal distress and psycho-social adjustment difficulties.
So let’s go through the basics.Depression and Diabetes – Probably Linked – Get Treatment – It helps lessen both your depression and reduces diabetes complications
When an amputation happens, it is going to be a big change. You’ve lived for years the way you are. And you probably haven’t even given the slightest thought to how your legs and feet served you so well for so many years. You took them for granted. How you look, how you move, will now have to be readjusted.
First you are going to have clear feelings of loss. A part of your body is gone forever. You will have anger, sadness, a feeling of helplessness and loss of control. This is a grief process and it is going to take some time. As time passes, while the feeling of loss will still be there, it will probably be less intense.
With help, you will start to learn to cope. You will be less mad at yourself and your body and yet you might still sleep less, eat more (or maybe less) and potentially not let other people “near” you.

But – in the mean time – IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO AMPUTATION WITH TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY?
Actually, there is, at least for some who take proactive steps fast to treat the underlying issues associated with your amputation diagnosis.Listen to how one patient achieved relief from neuropathy, experienced wound healing and avoided amputation.
If your diabetes disease has progressed to the state where physicians are recommending amputation, there may actually be treatment available to you that address the underlying causes, potentially reversing the issues, healing the wounds that won’t go away and actually saving your foot or limb.

Diabetes as a metabolic disorder that inhibits body healingHaving Issues with Your Feet or Legs?
In earlier blogs, we discussed how diabetes is a metabolic disorder, that affects how the body converts blood sugar into energy that powers the body’s cells to do their work. One of the jobs that healthy cells do is healing. Built into cells is a DNA-encoded process that sets cells to work fixing the body. You get a cut, cells somehow know about it and set about healing the cut. Blood clots, scabs form, nutrients get to the wound site and start to put the skin back together again. You might have a scar (because it is new skin compared to the old), but you get to function again without constantly having to put a band-aid on the cut.
Also remember that a healthy pancreas injects insulin into the body in a special way – not just dumping insulin in slowly but in high-pressure, modulated bursts. This normal introduction of insulin is not replicated is the process of injecting insulin in a muscle. This approach does provide insulin, but not timed the way a normal pancreas does it. So the cells and the liver (that is also active in this process) don’t get the best clue that action is needed.
